According to the newest annual report from The American Academy of Facial and Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, Rhinoplasty was the most requested cosmetic procedure among millenials in 2021.

So why are millennials more focused on rhinoplasty than other age groups? Most patients over 40 are generally more concerned about fighting the signs of aging so procedures such as belpharoplastys and facelifts are more commonly requested. Whereas, millennials are more influenced by the images they see on social media platforms such as Instagram and Tiktok where facial features are dramatically changed with the use of filters.

Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

So, how do you know if you’re a candidate for rhinoplasty surgery? Anyone that wants to change the shape of their nose may be a candidate for rhinoplasty. However, it’s important to note that the use of filters often represent an unattainable result. That’s why it’s important to find a board certified surgeon who has extensive knowledge and experience with rhinoplasty surgery. One that can, not only answer all of your questions, but give you an honest and realistic expectation of the results that are attainable for YOU.

Are there non-surgical options available?

In some cases fillers can be used to hide a slight bump on the nose, however, this would only be an option for someone seeking a very minor change. Plus, fillers don’t last so it’s likely that the patient would need to return again every year to have the procedure repeated and it’s important to understand that repeated treatment with filler may make rhinoplasty surgery more difficult or even impossible in the future.

Patients who are opposed to going “under the knife” should also consider that non-surgical options are not without their own risks. Fillers to the nose may have a slightly unnatural look because fillers cannot mimic bone and cartilage and fillers may pose a risk to the blood supply to parts of the nose which can lead to necrosis or death of the surrounding tissue.

What is the recovery process like after rhinoplasty surgery?

A small cast is placed on the bridge of the nose after surgery and a few small sutures under the nose may be present. Patients may feel stuffy and some minor bruising and swelling is expected but usually begins to subside in the first few days after surgery. The majority of swelling will subside in the first 6 months but may take up to a full year to completely heal.

What is your advice for anyone considering rhinoplasty surgery?

Our advice to any patient undergoing any procedure is to have patience. Your body will go through many changes post-operatively. You may feel that your result is great at times and less than what you expected at other times.

The full maturity of your result can take up to a year to be realized. We all want to get the finish line right away, but it takes time for your body to heal and for the work of the surgeon to take effect. Don’t inspect every inch of your new nose with a microscope on a daily basis. Follow your doctor’s instructions and be patient. The results will come with time.
